PHILOSOPHY OF KENPO KUNG FU

I have sublimely learned though philosophy right and wrong, “such as avoid rather than check, check rather than harm, harm rather than maim, and maim rather than kill, for which all life is precious and none can be replaced,” insert from Kung Fu ultimately meaning to where one uses as little force necessary to deal with a situation.

In other words you can read this passage and use common sense, but sublimely you can visualize what each of these mean to you and represents.

Outside of the dojo’s protection, I have learned to go with the flow rather than to go with the force of things.  I know we have been taught this, but I have put it into real situations with people.  Some things just aren’t worth arguing about.

“I have learned that when the rivers meet the ocean, there are mixed currents and they have to compromise with each other or the rivers would be dried up and the ocean would be too full.   We are the rivers and the world is the ocean.   We all have to compromise, go with the flow, and respect one another. If not, the world would be empty and we would force each other to extinction,” personal philosophy of Sifu Bowers.

At the end of every class the student is required to sit through a lesson in a relaxed manner to sublimely calm down the anger and control their actions.  Training the mind takes much longer than the physical abilities. One reason is because that we naturally use so little of our brains capacity and mental training requires experience with life. This is why wisdom (not intellect) comes with age in most cases. The other reason it takes so long to train the mind is that at one point our bodies are only capable of so much, but our mind can go far beyond that imaginable in knowledge, wisdom, etc.

The purpose to train the mind in martial arts is to bring an inner peace to an individual that is positive to society. A seed of anger and violence will only continue to breed evil intentions, but an example of virtue and benevolence will spread continent to continent and generation to generation. Along with lessons the philosophy provides a more clear way of thinking that isn’t distorted with negative thoughts. The philosophy of Kenpo is to improve the individuals’ positive outlook, personal awareness and alertness, temper, values, honor and so forth.

Examples of the philosophy in Kenpo other than above and throughout this page are:

“To a willing mind, nothing is impossible”-Lao Tzu

“Show me a man of violence who came to a good end and I will take him as my teacher”

“Optimism is the tools we need to succeed, pessimism blunts these tools”-Bruce Lee

“Water is the softest, purest substance on earth. You can put water into a cup, it will become that cup; you put water into a bottle, it will become that bottle; you put water into pot it becomes the pot; now water can crash or water can flow, be water my friend”

“Uncontrolled anger can lead to uncontrolled fighting”-Ed Parker

“Will-power is the hammer that drives actions”

“Fear is nothing but a vague illusion, to educate ourselves and make it known is the way to master it and make it transparent”-Sifu Cheyenne Bowers

“In order for us or society to understand the whole entirety of things, first we must learn to examine all the separate pieces that create this entirety”

For more information on philosophy, there are several books available on this subject, but if you are interested in a martial art that wishes to enhance training by every means possible, contact me today and I’ll be glad to visit with you by phone or in person at the studio to discuss what Kenpo can do for you. The first week is absolutely free, without any obligation there after.
