GROUND FIGHTING

Briefly, the picture depicted here is Ed Parker’s universal pattern of motion. Many Kenpo systems use this symbol due to its meaning.

You see the “+” and “x” in the symbol? Now see the “O” in the symbol? How about the spirals, figure 8’s, triangles, squares, half circles, quarter circles, hearts, octagon, etc.?

From these symbols it depicts every way possible of defense and offense that the body can move. This symbol can be applied to many arts. Through years of studying this symbol you can uncap secret movements of your own.

This is all relevant to ground fighting. In our Kenpo Kung Fu ground fighting course which is taught at blue to green belt level, you learn basic ways of neutral positions, stances, strikes, holds, etc.

The holds and takedowns however are special training methods which can flow into your techniques and appear as if they were always there. Remember everything comes together. After practicing several locks and holds and being able to know the takedowns one will practice freestyle grappling.

The student first works on tapping the other out via holds only to get used to grappling. From here chin na is very vital to apply better locks. After more acquainted with the ground one will practice in a sparring setting and takedown the other practitioner and lock them up. Now in Chinese Kenpo we are not concerned about wrestling around or just ground grappling like Jujitsu is (another art I have taken and studied for a brief duration), we are more concerned about taking them out quick.

We study for street purposes to break the rules of what is used in organized televised fights to deal with those types of characters. Remember it is all fine and dandy if you can defend and get away in a real situation. But what if you turn and there is no immediate way out or a door is locked and you are trapped in this area with this attacker. If he hasn’t gotten up already, be ready because he will if it was a simple defense technique that distracted him momentarily. Now you have to redo everything all over again. This is not play time or sees who can be the next champion, this is street survival.

Always be acknowledged of the restricted clothing you have on at the time, and your opponent's abilities as well. If you are able to take a hit and you fall down then you are vulnerable so proper ground work is needed at this time. The use of these is so you can overcome your opponent no matter what size unless you like trading hits to see who is stronger and faster. We want quick in and quick out!

*THESE METHODS ARE TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF WHAT THE TRAINING IS LIKE AND A REFERENCE FOR STUDENTS AND NOT TO ACT AS A TRAINING TOOL.
